A short description of my summer elective seminar at SCI-Arc: ### Games and Worldmaking [[The Garden of Eden Creation Kit (GECK)]] Real-time simulations are an exciting new way of modeling urban phenomena. Going beyond drawing, mapping and diagramming, the students will learn how to leverage the power of Unreal Engine to create a multi-scalar, interactive, playable model of a self-sustaining, wind and solar-powered robotic garden, set in a desert landscape. We will look into simulation games such as SimCity and SimEarth, as precedents for the work, and explore how to utilize game workflows as ways to model architectural assets. Beside the practical foundation, the seminar will feature invited guests who will shed light on emergent practices of [[worldmaking]], and give a theoretical basis for discussions. The seminar is part of the Planet City research project that is conducted at SCI-Arc for Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition. important points: a worldmaking approach goes beyond drawing, maps and diagrams, and beyond 2d graphics in general. as a design approach, this worldmaking practice utilizes real time simulation as a framework for modeling. cinematic storytelling is not enough, there needs to be a working interactive computational model at the core. We will design a three dimensional, real-time, interactive model of a toy world. for more context of what I am trying to get at, look at this text : [[Adam Berg, Wittgenstein’s Pinball Machine]]
